Factors to consider

The following are essential points to consider when considering the installation of a GSHP system:

  1. What type of heat distribution system is required?  - Under floor heating/radiators/hot air
  2. Is there adequate space for installation of the ground loop?
  3. What would be most suitable, a borehole or trench?
  4. Is the ground suitable for the “heat collector” proposed?
  5. Will the system be powered 100% by renewable energy? - Use of PV or green electricity tariff
  6. Will the system be installed during other building works to reduce the cost?
  7. Does the property have adequate energy efficiency standards?
  8. Will the system be used for cooling in the summer period?

GSHPs can be installed in either new buildings or during a refurbishment. However, it is strongly advised that the ground loop is installed during the new build process. This is because the external works, i.e trenching or boring, are more easily installed when the digging of foundations is taking place. The heat pump itself can be installed and connected to the indoor heat distribution system once the internal structure of the building is in place and other services are being installed.
